12 things we’ll need to rethink once we’ve got through the coronavirus health emergency

Rethinking Society

We have a society that’s on tenterhooks, a society with no Plan B. We’re living from day to day and nobody is planning for the future. Society has feet of clay.

+ Science – Football

During these days of lockdown, we’re realising we can live without football. It makes no sense that some footballers earn as much in a year as 4,000 scientists combined.

Fake News

Fake news and lies lead to misinformation, to perceiving reality incorrectly and to making poor decisions.

– Politicians + Professionals

In recent years, we have seen many politicians come to power without any experience whatsoever and with little preparation. The politicians we elect are a reflection of who we are.

Journalism and the Media

Many media organisations and journalists have not risen to the occasion. Many media outlets have turned news into a spectacle.

Rethinking the Economy

What sort of economy are we living in if, after just one month out of work, we struggle to put food on the table? We need to create sustainable economies that are fit for the future.

+ Values – Selfishness

Times of crisis bring out the most compassionate side of people. But they also reveal the least compassionate side: people can be highly self-centred.

Rethinking Technology

We have Big Data, Artificial Intelligence, Blockchain, … but they have been of little or no use in predicting or tackling the pandemic. Yes to technology, but for the sake of people.

Rethinking Education

We need to review the priorities of education. It is a powerful tool for shaping society that we are failing to make the most of.

– Bureaucracy + Efficiency

We need to rethink the excessive legislation and bureaucracy that individuals and businesses have to put up with. We need to make things much simpler and more efficient.

Personal Social Responsibility

If we demand social responsibility from businesses and public authorities, we must lead by example through personal responsibility.

This crisis must be an opportunity

We must learn from the crisis to improve society, the economy, education, … Let’s not repeat the mistakes of the 2008 crisis.
