Executive leadership to drive strategic change.
Defining a new strategy is the easy part; executing it whilst maintaining day-to-day operations is where most companies fall short. Whether it’s a far-reaching digital transformation, a change in business model or post-merger cultural integration, transformation requires dedicated leadership that breaks down departmental silos.
The CEO cannot manage this alone, and the current management team is often overwhelmed by ‘business as usual’.
EPUNTO’s Chief Transformation Officer (CTO) service provides a senior executive dedicated exclusively to steering the change. Their assignment is cross-functional: to align people, processes and technology to take the organisation from ‘State A’ to ‘State B’ in the shortest possible time, ensuring that the strategic vision translates into tangible operational and financial results.
How does a Chief Transformation Officer differ from a Project Manager (PMO)?
The PMO coordinates and reports on the status of the project; the CTO leads and makes decisions. The Chief Transformation Officer is an executive (C-level) role with the authority to redesign processes, restructure teams and make budgetary decisions. They do not merely ensure that the project is completed on time, but also guarantee that the organisation embraces the change both culturally and operationally.
Does the CTO need to be a technology expert?
Not necessarily, although they must have a strong digital background. Their core competencies are business acumen and change management. Their role is not to programme or configure systems, but to understand how technology enables the business and to lead the adaptation of people and processes to these new tools in order to create value.
How do you deal with internal resistance from current managers?
Resistance is the main reason for the failure of transformations. As an external and neutral leader, the Interim CTO operates free from internal political dynamics. They report directly to the CEO or the Board, which gives them the authority needed to align incentives, break down departmental silos and make difficult decisions with complete objectivity.
How can we ensure that the transformation actually has an impact on EBITDA?
At EPUNTO, transformation is not an end in itself, but a means to an end. Our Interim CTO links every initiative in the transformation plan to a clear business KPI (e.g. reducing operating costs, increasing digital sales or improving margins). If an initiative does not have a clear business case that improves the profit and loss account, it is either discarded or reformulated.
What happens when the Interim CTO’s assignment comes to an end?
The aim of the Interim CTO is to make themselves redundant. Unlike a consultant, who may create dependency, our executive works from day one to transfer knowledge. At the end of the assignment (usually lasting 12 to 18 months), they leave the new processes firmly established and the in-house team equipped to maintain the new operating model without external assistance.
