Interim Management for the Public Sector and NGOs

Professional management in the service of the mission.

In the public sector and the third sector, management demands have grown faster than the resources available to meet them. Whether you run a public body, a foundation or an NGO, your board, your trustees and your funders now expect the same as any investor would: timely delivery, transparent accounts and evidence of the impact achieved.

Commitment to the mission is no substitute for management capability, and many organisations that excel in their purpose are hampered by a structure that cannot cope with a large programme or justify funding with sufficient guarantees.

EPUNTO Interim Management brings in executives with proven experience in managing complex organisations and an understanding of social objectives. They take the helm for a limited period, bring order to programmes, processes and financial control, and train the team to ensure that improvements are sustained once their tenure ends.

Programme and fund implementation

Securing funding is only half the job; implementing it effectively and justifying it properly is what secures the next round.

  • Programme management: We place executives with experience in implementation, timetabling and budgetary control at the helm of projects and funds.

  • Accountability and control: We organise the documentation and financial monitoring from the outset, so that accountability does not become a last-minute rush.

  • Procurement and suppliers: We manage procurement processes in accordance with the transparency and competitive tendering requirements set out in the applicable framework.

Will a company executive understand our mission and our culture?
This is the primary selection criterion for these assignments. We put forward candidates with previous experience in public bodies, foundations or NGOs, or with a track record that demonstrates this sensitivity. Without it, the management will not take root, however good it may be.
We have a fund or programme with a set timeframe for implementation, and we’re running out of time.
It’s a typical assignment. An acting programme director joins the team in less than ten days, reorganises the schedule and takes charge of liaising with the funder, with the justification prepared from the outset rather than at the end.
Our board of trustees is calling for greater transparency, and we don’t know where to start.
Because of the information the board needs to make decisions, and because of the internal controls that underpin it. An interim appointment sorts out both of these matters within a few weeks and puts in place a reporting cycle that the organisation can then maintain on its own.
Does interim management fit within our recruitment framework?
It is structured as a professional service with a defined scope, timeframe and deliverables. Our managers are familiar with the requirements regarding advertising and competition and operate within these parameters.
How do you ensure that the improvement is sustained once the interim manager leaves?
Be involved in the assignment from the outset: the interim role ensures that processes are documented and that someone within the organisation is prepared to take on the role. The aim is not to create dependency, but to build in-house capacity.
