The study involved companies from the international networks ‘Globalise – The Global Interim Management Group’ and ‘Senior Management Worldwide (SMW)’, alongside the EIM business group.

Forty of the largest interim management firms, based in 50 countries across Europe, the Americas, Asia and Oceania, took part in the “First International Study on Interim Management”. Below are some of the most relevant figures regarding the procurement of interim management services at an international level.

Acceptance and consolidation of interim management:

67.35 per cent of the business leaders surveyed believe that interim management services are viewed positively in their country. 48.98 per cent believe that the practice is well established.

Size of companies engaging interim management services:

According to the aforementioned study, out of every 100 engagements, 32.63 are requested by companies with 501 to 1,000 employees, 28.82 by companies with more than 1,000 employees, 26.41 by companies with between 100 and 500 employees, and 12.14 by companies with fewer than 100 employees.

From which management positions are interim management services commissioned:

60.56 per cent of appointments are made by senior management (39.80 per cent) or by the HR department (20.76 per cent). These are followed by: the Board of Directors (13.67 per cent), finance management (6.94 per cent), operations management (5.76 per cent) and country managers (5.31 per cent). Only 0.30 per cent of IM engagements are initiated by marketing and communications departments. Some 7.46 per cent come from other departments or related bodies.

Common reasons for engaging interim management services:

95.92% of the business owners surveyed cite change management and general management – or a specific role – as the main reasons for engaging interim management services. This is followed, at 93.88 per cent, by the restructuring and turnaround of companies or business divisions, supply chain management and procurement. Next came the temporary replacement of an executive for project management (91.84 per cent) and the review and reduction of costs (91.84 per cent). The least common situations for engaging interim management are: supervising executives (51.02 per cent) and the launch or promotion of new products and services (55.10 per cent).

Most in-demand roles for interim management services:

The most sought-after role is that of Finance Director/CFO (95.92 per cent). This is followed, with a high percentage, by the role of Operations Director/COO (89.80 per cent), Managing Director/CEO (87.76 per cent), HR Directors (77.55 per cent), Project Management Directors (73.47 per cent), Technical Directors/CTOs/CIOs/Systems Directors (65.31 per cent) and Procurement Directors (55.10 per cent). Communications management is the role least in demand by clients of interim management firms (12.24 per cent). Out of every 100 interim management appointments, 21.27 per cent are for finance directors/CFOs, 16.14 per cent for chief executives/CEOs, 15.90 per cent for operations directors and 10.73 per cent for HR directors.
